WELSH-BRANCH FOUNDER. Baptised 25 Sep 1822 at Stoke St Gregory, son of John Chedgzoy (a MASON) and Ann [FreeREG, Chedgzoy spelling]. The MASON occupation identifies the father as John #1761 (son of Levi #45) m. Ann nee GAIT (#1762) - NOT the labourer John #28 (whose children Charles #522/Daniel #73/John #19 all read 'labourer'). Same mason family as the confirmed son Thomas #115 (b.1817 SSG, 'father a mason'). James later moved to the South Wales coalfield: by the 1861/1871 censuses he heads a Pontypridd (Llantrisant/Llanwonno) household with wife Eliza (b.~1830 Burrowbridge) and sons George (b.1854 N.Petherton), Charles (b.1855 N.Petherton), John (b.1858 Treforest), James (b.1862), Walter (b.1864) - the founders of the whole S.Wales Chedgzoy/Chedzoy branch. Link to John #1761 = STRONG (occupation + parish + mother's name); flagged probable pending the baptism image. [Linked 12 Jun 2026; see census-roll 1861-H/1871-H, EV-016 context.] [2026-06-13 Ancestry] EMIGRATION + DEATH (probable). The Welsh-mason patriarch: b. 25 Sep 1822, bapt. Stoke St Gregory (son of John #1761 the mason + Ann Gait #1762 -- tree confirms "John Chedgzoy + Ann Gaite"). Married Eliza Bell (GRO Marriage Index Q2 1849, Taunton). Migrated SSG -> Welsh coalfield (1861 census Pontypridd/Llanwonno, mason) -> USA, dying 23 May 1896 at Robin, Bannock County, IDAHO, USA. Bannock Co. is heavily LDS -> likely a Welsh-Mormon emigration. Sources: Ed Ryan tree + multiple member submissions (all 23 May 1896) + SSG baptism + 1861 Wales census + GRO marriage. Confidence: PROBABLE (US death attested in trees/submissions, no US primary record pulled yet -- US census/Idaho death/Find A Grave to confirm). Set MotherId -> Ann Gait #1762 (tree-confirmed; she is already #1761 the mason wife). SIGNIFICANCE: this whole sub-branch went SSG -> Wales -> America (son Walter #2045 d. Pennsylvania). {CENSUS/DIASPORA} External tree (parents John Chedgzoy + Ann Gaite, b.25 Sep 1822 SSG) gives spouse Eliza Bell, son Samuel; 1861 census at Llanwonno, Glamorgan, WALES; later EMIGRATED to the USA, died 23 May 1896 at Robin, Bannock County, IDAHO. A Somerset -> South Wales -> Idaho migration. (The 1851 North Petherton J Chedzoy, son of William, is a different James.) [Ancestry, transcription pass].
