Sources & research

Child of Levi Chedgzoy and Ann, baptised 15 Apr 1764 at Stoke St Gregory. Siblings: Mary, Levie, Issachar, William, William, Joan, Thomas. Parents confirmed from the FreeREG baptism record. [merged from duplicate #1759] Daughter of Levi Chedzoy and Ann Pearce, baptised 15 Apr 1764 at Stoke St Gregory, the eldest of their seven children. FreeREG record No confident later record has been found. The FreeREG marriage index shows no Mary Chedzoy marrying at Stoke St Gregory or its neighbouring parishes; the only Mary Chedzoy marriages in the wider county within range (Burnham on Sea 1797, Holford 1802) are in distant parishes belonging to other Chedzoy families and do not fit her. No burial for her appears in the Stoke St Gregory transcripts. Her trail ends at her baptism. She may have died young (the burial register has gaps) or married away from the area. Treated as unproven beyond baptism. PARKED 15 Jun 2026: captured to baseline - sourced FreeREG baptism with parents named, plus sibling-group / probable-parent notes. Pre-1837, so census & civil registration do not apply; further work is BLOCKED pending deeper parish research (FreeREG marriage/burial, will, bishop's transcript) to confirm and create the parent records. NOT un-started - researched to the limit of the single available record. UPDATE 15 Jun 2026: Sue Froud's Chedzoy family-tree transcription resolves the open death question. She records this Mary (dau. of Levi Chedzoy 1737 and Ann Pearce, bapt. 15 Apr 1764) as having "lived to be 79" and "buried 2nd July 1843" at Stoke St Gregory. The age (79) is consistent with a 1764 birth. This is Sue's transcription (a strong sourced lead), filling the gap the FreeREG-only pass left open. APEX CORROBORATION (FamilySearch, 16 Jun 2026): this Mary's 1843 burial is confirmed independently -- Mary Chedzoy, buried 2 July 1843 at Stoke St Gregory, birth recorded c.1766 (England, Somerset, Church Records 1501-1999), consistent with her 1764 baptism. She lived locally into the 1840s, which keeps her viable as the candidate mother of John #28 (illegitimate, baptised Aller 1798); see John #28's notes. Still a hypothesis to prove. [2026-06-25] PROBABLE mother of John #28 (the direct line): John was baptised illegitimate at Aller 14 Jan 1798 naming only 'Mary Chedzoy'. Mary #1662 (unmarried, b.1764, d.1843 SSG) is the best-fit candidate, making her Chris's direct gen-5 ancestor via Levi #45. To confirm/attach pending review. [2026-06-25 CAUTION] The hypothesis that this Mary (Levi #45 daughter, b.1764) is John #28's mother is now only ONE candidate and is unproven. A separate unmarried Mary Chedzoy had a base-born cluster at Mark 1791-97 continuing to John at Aller 1798 - possibly John's actual mother. Do NOT assert #1662 as John's mother. See #28 notes. [2026-06-27 SHC index] WEAKENED further as John #28's mother. The Somerset Settlement & Bastardy Index shows the ONLY documented unmarried Mary of this surname (spelt CHEDZEY) is at MARK - Bastardy Order 1793 + Indemnity Bond 1799, putative father Richard Pewtner/Putener (refs D/P/mk/13/5/2 and D/P/mk/13/5/1). There is NO bastardy/settlement record for a Mary Chedzey at Stoke St Gregory. So #1662 (the SSG spinster) has no poor-law corroboration as a base-born mother, while a rival DOCUMENTED unmarried Mary at Mark does. Do not promote #1662; the Mark Mary is now the stronger lead. See John #28 notes + research/john28-parents-recon.md.
