Family
Records of Robert Chedzoy's birth and marriage are not listed in the Stoke St Gregory parish register. When Robert was born King Charles I would have been on the English throne, who was succeeded by Oliver Cromwell in 1649, when a lot of church re cordswere destroyed. The records for Stoke St Gregory begin in 1561, copied from the original register that was stolen. By the time Robert married Elizabeth, King Charles II was ruling England, Robert and Elizabeth had five children between 1661 ? and 1668 and there may have been other earlier children. Walter born about 1661, no record of his baptism has been found, but at the time very few children were baptised, the curate of Stoke St Gregory made a comment to this in the register. Ewa rd baptised 11th June 1663, at Gregory Stoke. Robert baptised 15th January 1666. Alexander baptised 15th March 1668. Judith baptised 13th June 1671. Robert was a man of some substance, as he left a will which was proved in 1668, but unfortunately it was destroyed at Exeter in 1942. Robert died in late 1685 and was buried 30th December 1685, the same year as King Charles II, whose brother Jame s II was then crowned, which led to the Battle of Sedgemoor in which two of his sons fought. Robert's wife Elizabeth died in 1701 and was buried 28th January 1701 at Stoke St Gregory. Edward and Robert fought in the Battle of Sedgemoor on the side of Monmouth, they were both captured.
Sources & research
The founding Chedzoy at Stoke St Gregory, married to Elizabeth. Her forename is confirmed by three baptisms naming the parents as Robert and Elizabeth: Robert (1665/6), Alexander (1667/8) and Judith (1671). [FreeREG]
Their recorded children, all at Stoke St Gregory: Edward (1663), Robert (1665/6), Alexander (1667/8) and Judith (1671); Walter (b. c.1661) is inferred as their eldest, his baptism predating the surviving register. The register's earliest Chedzoy entry is Edward's 1663 baptism, and a full FreeREG sweep of the parish 1655-1690 under both the Chedzoy and Chidzoy spellings found no other children, so this set of five appears complete within the surviving records.
