Sources & research

Son of John Chedzoy (#28) and Ann, baptised 2 Aug 1835 at Stoke St Gregory (Chedgzoy spelling, father a labourer); buried 20 Mar 1836 as an infant. FreeREG record IMPORTANT: he is wrongly recorded as gen-7 and as the father of John James Chedgzoy (#10, born 1861). That is impossible - he died in 1836. The gen-7 anchor and the link to John James are FALSE and need removing; John James's real father is a different John Chedgzoy (see #10). John #28 and Ann had no surviving son named John (1851 census). [2026-06-13 Ancestry] *** DIRECT-LINE FINDING -- RECOMMENDED CORRECTION, NEEDS REVIEW *** This record currently shows BORN 1836 and DIED 1836 (buried 20 Mar 1836) yet has 8 children linked to it (John James #10, plus #20,#21,#22,#23,#24,#26,#1739) born 1861-1875 -- internally impossible. Evidence shows #19 is the SURVIVING gen-7 John who lived to 1874: - Baptised 2 Aug 1835 Stoke St Gregory (FreeREG, already cited in Notes), son of John #28 + Ann #29. - 1871 England Census: John Chedgzoy, b.~1837 Stoke St Gregory, resident Kings Norton, Worcestershire (alive, ~36). - Marriage 30 Jun 1861, London (London C of E Marriages & Banns) to SARAH CAROLINE O DELL. - Son John James #10 born 14/24 Oct 1861, Islington, London (4 months after the marriage) -- matches. - BIRD/CHEDGZOY tree: died 14 Jul 1874, Balsall Heath, Birmingham (consistent with this record already showing deathplace Birmingham). CONCLUSION: the #10->#19 father link is CORRECT; the bug is #19 death date. The "buried 20 Mar 1836" almost certainly belongs to a DIFFERENT infant John (name reused), wrongly attached here. RECOMMEND (pending review): set #19 birth = 2 Aug 1835 (bapt. Stoke St Gregory); death = 14 Jul 1874, Balsall Heath, Birmingham; add wife Sarah Caroline O Dell (m. 30 Jun 1861 London). Then the direct line 1798(#28)->1835(#19)->1861(#10) is fully sourced. (GRO death index entry for the 1874 death still to be pulled to finish the citation.) [2026-06-13 Ancestry, citation completed] GRO confirmation of the 1874 death: England & Wales Civil Registration Death Index 1837-1915 -- John Chedgzoy, b.abt 1836, death Sep qtr (Q3) 1874, Worcestershire (Kings Norton district = Balsall Heath/Birmingham). A member record gives exactly b. 02 Aug 1835 / d. 14 Jul 1874, matching the FreeREG baptism (2 Aug 1835 SSG) already cited. 1841 census also has John Chedzoy abt 1836 at Stoke St Gregory (as a child in this family). OPEN QUESTION (one John, or two?): either (A) this single record is the survivor and its death should be CORRECTED to 14 Jul 1874 Balsall Heath (drop the spurious "buried 20 Mar 1836"), or (B) #28 & Ann had TWO sons named John -- an infant buried 20 Mar 1836, and the survivor bapt. 2 Aug 1835 who married Sarah Caroline O Dell and died 1874 -- in which case this record should be SPLIT into two people. Either way the children #10/#20/#21/#22/#23/#24/#26/#1739 belong to the 1835-1874 survivor. Tree fields left UNCHANGED pending review (backup: site.before-ancestry-research-20260613.db). [2026-06-14 corroboration] The 1841 census (HO107/941/8/5) lists "John Chedzoy, age 5" in John #28 + Ann's SSG household -- i.e. ALIVE in 1841, b.~1836. This independently confirms the surviving gen-7 John (this record), reinforcing that the "buried 20 Mar 1836" death wrongly attached here belongs elsewhere. (Still to be applied/split pending review.) {CENSUS} Died in infancy (1836); no census appearance (pre-1841). [Ancestry, transcription pass].
