Sources & research

Son of John Chedzoy (#28) and Ann, born about 1835 at Stoke St Gregory (an Edmund Chedzoy baptism of 21 Jul 1833 appears in the FreeREG transcripts; the exact year is to be reconciled with the census). He left Somerset for the industrial north: his death was registered Apr-Jun 1888 in the Ecclesall Bierlow registration district (Sheffield, Yorkshire), aged 53 (GRO ref 9c/172, FreeBMD, Chedgzoy spelling). He is part of the family's move to South Yorkshire that shows up in the modern surname distribution. His marriage and children are for the census/Ancestry pass. Death year corroborated: registered Apr-Jun 1888, Ecclesall Bierlow RD, Sheffield, as Edmund Chedgzoy b.~1835. Source: England & Wales Civil Registration Death Index 1837-1915 (GRO; Ancestry collection 8914), retrieved 11 Jun 2026. Marriage + Sheffield household now documented (verified 13 Jun 2026, Ancestry census). Married Ruth (nee BENNETT, #1889, b.~1837 Sheffield). 1881 census at 12 Clough Field, Nether Hallam, Sheffield [TNA RG11/4627 f22 p35] with Ruth and children Thomas (b.~1866), Ann Elizabeth (#209, b.1873), John William (#204, b.1875), Ellen (b.~1877), Edmund (b.~1879). The household was transcribed "Chedzzoy" (double-z), which is why it had been hard to locate. This family is the documented root of the modern South Yorkshire (~42%) Chedgzoy cluster: John #28 -> Edmund #76 -> John William #204 -> Emmeline #206 etc. {CENSUS} Founder of the SHEFFIELD branch. External tree (parents John + Ann Chedzoy, b.21 Jul 1833 SSG): married Ruth Bennett (our #1889) in Sheffield; 1871 census in Yorkshire; died Apr/Jun 1888 at Ecclesall, Yorkshire West Riding (Civil Reg. Death Index confirms; a Sheffield C of E marriage record also exists). Confirms our 1888 death. Son Thomas. This is the Somerset -> Sheffield migration that seeds the whole Sheffield Chedgzoy cluster. [Ancestry, transcription pass].
